Angelina Already Stirring Controversy over Directorial Debut
Angelina Jolie is always in the spotlight anyway so what’s another day with the paps in her face? Well, looks like this time they hit a soft spot going directly after her baby, and I don’t mean one of Brangelina’s six famous globe-trotting tots.
Jolie is in the process of directing her first movie; a yet-to-be-titled taboo love story about a Serbian man (Rade Serbedzija) and a Bosnian woman (Zana Marjanovic) set on the eve of the 1992 Bosnian war. For all you geography and history whizzes out there, we are talking about an area in Eastern Europe, and the Serbians and the Bosnians can be compared to the North and the South during the U.S. Civil War. Get why the relationship between a Serb and Bosnian would be considered so controversial?
Whew. Don’t worry your lesson is over.
Anyway, the controversy really started when rumors began circulating that the love story was between a Serbian rapist and a Muslim victim. The Women Victims of War Association got involved and even Bosnia’s culture minister, Gavrilo Grahovac, decided to nix Jolie’s permit to shoot in Sarajevo. Jolie has since responded to the commotion by telling people not to “judge [me] before you see the film.”
Either way, the stories about the film are said to be totally incorrect, and the only crumbs we got so far are Jolie stating that, “there are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters and that will be revealed once the film is released.” When you’re so vague, it’s no wonder why people start coming up with their own stories. Guess we’ll have to wait until the film’s premiere sometime next year.
