Zac and Vanessa Split, But Maybe Not Really

It may be the season of waiting for someone under the mistletoe, but it seems like two of Hollywood's cuddliest, prettiest couples will be flying solo this season.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, teen heart throbs best known for High School Musical on-and-off-screen love affair, split up after nearly 5 years of dating. This comes as a shocker, seeing as the couple was seen throwing around some PDA in Hawaii as recently as three weeks ago.

Rumors are abound about reasons behind the breakup. Some credit Zac's recent summer foray to a strip club as both a sign and a cause of tension between the couple (he claimed he and his friends were "just curious"). Others note that the split seems just "too nice", especially since everyone insists that they are still friends, and that no third party was involved, to be the result of a passionate five year romance;  perhaps the relationship was a front all along (apparently to hide a closeted sexuality).

One source, however, says that it's more of a break then a split:

“They have officially called it quits, but my source believes that there is a great chance they will get back together,” an insider says. “They have hung out with each other as recently as two weeks ago and will continue to hang out, since they are best friends.”

“They realize that they both can trust each other, and there will be a bond between them forever...Career demands, distance and to enjoy being single are the main reasons for the break up. I’d be shocked if they don’t get back together someday.”

While I'm all for young love, I have to say I'm totally fine with this split. Frankly, I think Efron's star is rising a little too high to be held down by Hudgens. He was great in "Me and Orson Welles," and could potentially be a quite charming Hollywood talent. She, on the other hand, only sticks in my mind for her sketchy naked picture debacle. Oh, and for her HORRENDOUS singing in the Hollywood Bowl production of Rent. Maybe that was the kicker-- a poorly done serenade can put out the fire in the steamiest relationships.
