Woman Suspected Of Arson Over Facebook Unfriending

DES MOINES, Iowa ~ (Des Moines Register/ CBS News) ~ A woman accused of arson allegedly committed the act due to a dispute on Facebook, according to police.

Detectives arrested 30-year-old Jennifer Christine Harris, of Des Moines, and charged her with first-degree arson after a fire tore through the garage of Jim and Nikki Rasmussen on Thursday, October 27th. Officials said the fire started around 1:00am; the family was sleeping but were alerted by a popping noise followed by a “boom”. They escaped their house as the fire from the detached garage melted the siding. The garage roof later collapsed and cars and stored property were lost in the blaze.

When investigators were questioning Jim Rasmussen about who might want to do them harm, he provided the name of Jennifer “Jen” Harris and said Harris was a long-term friend of his wife. A police report said, “…the two are no longer friends due to a dispute over Facebook. According to Nikki, Jen is angry with her because she ended their friendship on Facebook.”

Police detective Jack Kamerick gave more details, saying, “Jen asked Nikki to create an event on Facebook for a party. Nikki did that. As the date for the party approached there were a lot of ‘Declines’ on Facebook.” The dispute apparently blossomed and, when the garage went up in flames, Harris became the victims’ primary suspect. Police say an investigation supports the alleged suspicion, and Harris is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
