National Association Of Broadcaster's 2009 Convention In Las Vegas

The National Association of Broadcaster’s annual convention concluded in Las Vegas on the 23rd of April 2009. The NAB Show has been going strong for over 80 years. The main focus of the convention this year, was directed towards content professionals providing training, networking and a showcase of the newest technology that assists with the creation, sales of content and everything in between. The convention brought together people from around the world to get involved in the next wave of how to deliver and make money from many types of content over different mediums. These mediums include but are not limited to television, Internet, mobile broadcasts. Social media was showcased by many exhibitors on how to deliver specific content to target consumers.

Targeting specific types of consumers was the main focus at this year at the convention. The newer software assisting media companies with the sales of content had a greater focus on producing multiple streams to target niche customers, while providing the highest return on investment for advertisers. The convention also showcased how to deliver and manage TV or movie content over the Internet. By streaming content over the Internet, it can then be transported to mobile phones, network media players and broadcast to international governmental institutions. This reduces costs for production and increases the audience.

There were several content management and streaming solutions I found while touring the show floor. Managing content with the help of social media was showcased this year by The 48 Hour Film Project. Mark Ruppert, the executive producer at the 48 Hour Film Project, explained how they used the Internet to give potential film makers the chance to create an entire film in 48 hours. Their reach with this project was only possible over the Internet, they had 30,000 filmmakers in 70 cities in 2008 create movies by logging on to their site to get started. The focus of the project is “doing” a movie rather than “talking” about it. To learn more about the project, visit 48hourfilm.com.

The next company I found at the convention was Zap My TV. The software is an ICE (Integrated Content Environment) player which requires no downloads and brings broadcast quality video to the PC and iPhone. The company breaks down their software into three user groups: TV aficionado’s, users of digital media recorders and social networking pro’s. The social networking pro’s can create a ZapMyTV profile. The profile includes Viewing Circles, sharing a live viewing experience of similar shows and group chats with audio and video. To learn more visit Zapmytv.com.

MediaFLO by Qualcomm is a technology that was also brought to the forefront at the convention. Worldwide cellular providers have been looking for a way to get consumers to purchase more content via their mobile phones. MediaFLO consists of a personalized home screen, unified guide, IP data services, interactive advertising, chat, jukebox, social networking, ratings, program reminders and usage tracking for service providers. Personalization, with social networking and tracking helps content producers and advertisers find out which media achieved the highest ROI. The MediaFLO service is currently being tested worldwide by Qualcomm. To learn more visit Mediaflow.com.

Wowza Media Systems was the final booth that caught my attention. They had a live streaming demo of video to an iPhone running a beta version of the 3.0 software. Their newest software solution, Wowza Media Server Pro Advanced, takes a first step toward streaming from any codec, over any protocol to any player or device, served from any operating system. They also previewed smooth streaming to Silverlight, HTTP streaming to iPhone, RTP/RTSP streaming to the Apple QuickTime player, and MPEG-TS streaming in full HD to IPTV set-top boxes. David Stubenvoll, CEO and Co-Founder, was very proud to show everyone the amazingly smooth video being streamed live from their Wowza Media Server Pro Advanced software. Touring the many types of booths at the NAB 2009 convention in Las Vegas was a lot of fun. I was able to take a picture with a BELL Helicopter, the CNN Media Bus that toured America during the Presidential Campaign and an army tank. An innovative exhibitor called SIS Live, converted a Mini Cooper to send HD content over a live satellite up-link. The foot traffic was less than last year, but there was more excitement towards what the future will bring to broadcasting.
