Michigan Clinic Offers Free Pot For Voter Registration
LANSING, Michigan ~ (WLNS-TV/mlive.com/AP) ~ A local medical marijuana clinic's offer of free smoke to patient who register to vote has drawn scrutiny from many, including the state attorney general.
Your Healthy Choice clinic was offering a free ½-gram of cannabis or a THC-laced edible in an effort to educate their patrons about an upcoming city council election and Lansing's medical marijuana ordinance. Clinic owner Shekina Pina said, "it wasn't ever to lure patients or to try to buy their votes." She said they offered to mail in the voter registrations and wants to support those on the council who support medical marijuana businesses. "We let them know how we feel, we don't tell them who to vote for," Pena added, "we definitely want to support the ones who are supporting us."
But Michigan Attorney General Bill Shuette isn't happy with the clinic's offer and in a statement released earlier said his office was carefully reviewing the matter. "Citizens were told this was a way to help seriously ill people, yet here again is an example of the law being exploited by those with their own agenda," the statement said. In 2008 Michigan voters agreed to legalize cannabis for the treatment of some medical problems and earlier this month Lansing City Council approved a cap on marijuana dispensaries within the city limits, and also adopted application fees of $1,000. Other Michigan communities have passed local rules.
