Man Caught Smuggling Pot Across Border In Wheelchair

SAN DIEGO, California ~ Border authorities report that a man was caught trying to smuggle marijuana through a US-Mexico crossing with marijuana stashed under the seat of his wheelchair.

Officers working the San Ysidro port of entry claim that 19-year-old Donte Jonae Damas was crossing the border into the United States on March 28th in a wheelchair. Damas looked nervous drug-sniffing dog approached him at the port of entry’s pedestrian processing area. During a search, three packages of weed were discovered under the seat. US Customs and Border Protection then seized the smoke and the wheelchair and turned Damas over to U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

ICE spokeswoman Lauren Mack said Damas is an able-bodied US citizen and his use of the wheelchair "was just a ploy to distract the inspectors." Damas is being held at the San Diego County Jail on $35,000 bail; his next court appearance is April 11.
