John Lennon’s Molar Up for Auction in November [Video]

LONDON, England –“Beatle-tooth” –A tooth said to belong to former Beatle John Lennon is up for auction in London, with a reserve bidding price just under $16,000.

Lennon, who died in 1981, is said to have given the molar to his former housekeeper, Dorothy “Dot” Jarlett, who worked for him at his Surrey mansion in the sixties.

“She was very close with John, and one day whist chatting in the kitchen, John gave my mother the tooth [he had been to the dentist to have it removed that day] and suggested giving it to my sister as a souvenir, as she was a huge Beatles fan. It has been in the family ever since,” said Barry Jarlett, Dorothy’s son.

Jarlett said his mother, who is in her 90s, said it was the right time to pass it on rather than risk it being lost.

Omega Auction house owner, Karen Fairweather said, “This is the most wonderful and weird item that we have ever had for sale. It is a truly unique item, and it is really difficult to put a value on it”

“We get a lot of people buying memorabilia as investments, or it could just be a fan who really, really wants a part of John Lennon.”

Fairweather said because the tooth is very delicate they were unable to conduct a DNA test to ensure it belonged to the former Beatle, but she has no doubt it is authentic.

“Because it’s coming directly from Dot, we don’t doubt the provenance of the item,” she said.

Lennon memorabilia continues to be a popular item at auctions.

Last June, John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for the Beatles song, “A Day in the life” sold in New York for a staggering $1,202,500. The double-sided sheet of paper in Lennon’s hand contained corrections and crossed-out lyrics, showing how the masterpiece evolved.

The auction of the tooth is scheduled for Nov. 5 in England.
