ESPN Announcer Booted for Sweetcakes Comment
Well, it’s not even half as bad as texting pictures of your bits à la Brett Favre, but even sexist comments are still considered a no-no, especially in the world of pro football.
ESPN announcer Rod Franklin was booted from a bowl game last Friday for making inappropriate comments to Jeannine Edwards, a female sideline reporter.
According to reports, the exchange happened when Franklin and fellow announcers, Ed Cunningham and Rod Filmore got into a discussion concerning Gilmore’s wife and her election as mayor of Alameda, California.
When Edwards tried to add something to the discussion Franklin said, “"Why don't you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes."
Edward obviously got annoyed and replied saying, “don't call me sweetcakes, I don't like being talked to like that.”
To which Franklin replied, “okay then, asshole.”
Personally, I actually laughed when I read what was said during the ridiculous exchange and I’m a woman. Firstly because of the jump in name-calling from ‘sweetcakes’ to ‘asshole,’ and secondly, because I find it hilarious this guy is using lingo that hasn’t been used since ‘The Fonz’ said it on Happy Days.
Either way more power to her for sticking up for herself. And just so you know, she wasn’t the one who reported him; a colleague did who overheard the discussion. As a result Franklin was pulled from the announcement lineup and we still don’t know if he’ll be back.
This isn’t his first offense so ESPN may just be giving ol’ sweetcakes another ‘time out’ until things blow over.
