Elderly Wal-Mart Greeter Accused of Robbing Own Store at Gunpoint

STATESVILLE, N.C. ---- “Grandpa’s got a gun” --- An 83-year-old man who worked at a North Carolina Wal-Mart as a greeter is in jail after he allegedly tried to rob his place of employment with a gun on Sunday.

George Plane Jr. of Mooresville, N.C. (who resembles singer Paul Simon) was charged with armed robbery and discharging a firearm inside the city limits after police said he donned a disguise and tried robbing his own store.

Statesville Police said that Plane was working Sunday evening at the Wal-Mart store when he went to his vehicle sometime before 7 p.m.

Moments later, a man wearing a disguise approached an employee in the garden-center area pointed a gun and demanded the cash from the register.

Witnesses say the gunman fired at least one shot into the air before fleeing with the stolen cash.

Police, responding to a 911 call, were alerted to the gunman’s direction of travel by Wal-Mart customers, one of which followed the robber and lead police right to him, according to WBTV.

The state Highway Patrol and Iredell County sheriff's office joined Statesville police in spotting the vehicle a short distance away. Plane surrendered after a brief standoff.

The money was returned to the Wal-Mart store, and Plane is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $75,000 bond, police said.

At the time of this report it was unclear if Plane was still in jail, or if he had a retained a lawyer.

On a lighter note, I heard  North Carolina prisons offer senior crime classes. Day one, planning a crime, day two, even more planning, Day three, Macrame followed by a prison rape and a nap. Day four....well we will leave that to your imagination.
