Brazilian Woman Discovers Penis-Shaped Passion Fruit
SAN JOSE DE RIBAMAR, Brazil (G1.com) ~ A Brazilian gardener has come across a passion fruit vine that bears penis-shaped fruit. 53-year-old Maria Rodrigues de Aguiar Farias said that none of the fruit are ripe yet, but that hasn't stopped a string of visitors to her garden in the north Brazilian town. So many in fact, she's had to start charging for admission.
"I charge two reals to look, 15 for taking photographs, and 20 to shoot video," Farias told the news website G1.com; that's the currency equivalent of $1 for admission, $9 for pictures and $12 for video. Normally round, passion fruit are native to South America, and it's tart pulp can be found in many things, from desserts to caipirinhas, the Brazilian national cocktail.
Marcelo Cavallari, with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, has examined the odd-shaped fruit and deemed it healthy & safe for consumption, and says the unusual shape shouldn't be a reason to shy away from it. “It's pretty big, it's pretty thick,” he said. “It may even reach 15 to 20 cm in length.”
